SpeakOut Supports Afghan Women in NSW

SpeakOut joined the AWSA Volunteer Information Hub to promote volunteering, community connection and support for Afghan women and migrants in NSW.

Speakout has a long history of community engagement with migrant communities.

Speakout management and staff have lived experience of migration to Australia. We know, firsthand, the valuable contribution migrant women make to Australian society through leadership, sisterhood, and social connection.

In June, SpeakOut attended the Afghan Women Support Association’s (AWSA) Volunteer Information Hub. AWSA’s event was focused on sharing information about a range of organisations that assist refugees and migrant populations in NSW.

Why is volunteering important?

Volunteering provides people who are newly arrived in Australia to develop their local work experience, build their language skills and make contacts for future employment.

At the AWSA Volunteer Hub, SpeakOut joined organisations, such as the Salvation Army, Community Migrant Resource Centre, MTC, Services Australia, and SydWest, to showcase our work. SpeakOut was proud to be one of the sponsors of the event.

Our team interacted with participants, answering questions about the work we do, and the role we play in the community. Staff members Rukhshana, Sam, and Stella, along with CEO Maria, enjoyed meeting and connecting with the women.

Why engage in community events?

Community engagement events demonstrate our commitment to migrants and the leadership being shown by women in improving the lives of community members. By making connections with other organisations, and most importantly, acknowledging and celebrating Afghan women’s leadership in Australian society, we are also enriched and filled with hope.
